This stage, of moderate length and elevation gain, is entirely uphill and takes you into the Veglia Devero Natural Park, established in 1995 to protect the area's unique glacial and mineral geological features. A path leaves from Varzo, following the contour of the valley above the provincial road. This leads to the ski station of San Domenico di Varzo, from where you reach Ponta Campo via road, and then take a mule path that winds through gorges and rocky ledges along the valley floor until you reach the Veglia plain, home to the welcoming Rifugio Città di Arona. A short distance from the refuge, the beautiful Frua waterfall can be admired.
