This long stage with significant elevation gain is the first in the Province of Vercelli within the Sesia basin and its tributaries. From Valvogna, you descend to Riva Valdobbia and continue along the state road to Alagna Valsesia. From the district of Pedemonte, the uphill trail begins, leading into the Mud valley until it reaches the pass of the same name, located at 2324 meters above sea level, near which lies the Rifugio Ferrioli of CAI of Olgiate. This is followed by a long and steep descent into the village of Rima. In this stage and the following ones, the Sentiero Italia runs through the valleys inhabited by the Walser linguistic minority, descendants of ancient Germanic-speaking populations who settled the valleys around Monte Rosa in the Middle Ages.
