Clothing

Tackling the 8,000 km of the Sentiero Italia CAI requires versatility. The golden rule is the “layering system”: three complementary layers to manage every weather variation. Start with a breathable base layer in merino wool or technical synthetic fabric, designed to keep the skin dry. The mid layer, such as a lightweight fleece or a thin down jacket, provides thermal insulation by retaining body heat. Finally, the protective outer layer (a Gore-Tex shell or similar) must be waterproof and windproof to shield against the elements. Do not forget specific anti-chafing socks and well-tested hiking boots: proper foot care is the first step toward a successful journey. Dressing with awareness means turning comfort into safety, allowing the body to adapt dynamically to elevation changes and altitude variations.

Equipment and Safety: the Essentials on Your Back

A well-balanced backpack is your best travel companion. For the SICAI stages, weight must be kept to a minimum while remaining complete: a first-aid kit, a fully charged headlamp and an adequate water supply are essential. Technology also plays a key role in safety: in addition to carrying a physical trail map, the use of the GeoResQ app, managed by CNSAS and installed on your smartphone for tracking and emergency purposes, is strongly recommended. Trekking poles are valuable allies in relieving stress on the joints, especially on more technical sections. Remember to include a power bank, a signal whistle and an emergency thermal blanket. Preparing your backpack carefully is not just a logistical necessity, but an act of responsibility towards yourself and the mountains, ensuring that every day on the trail remains an experience of pure beauty.
