With this stage of intermediate length and a descent-only elevation change, the Sentiero Italia returns near Luino on Lake Maggiore after a diversion through the mountains of the northern extension of the Province of Varese. From Rifugio Campiglio, with a mostly flat path, the route heads southwest toward the border with Switzerland before decisively descending to the village of Dumenza and then to the hamlet of Creva in Luino. Here, there is a dam on the Tresa River that connects Lake Lugano with Lake Maggiore. Another significant aspect of this neighborhood is the historic presence of the Hussy natural and synthetic yarn factories, which have left an indelible mark on the economic and settlement development of the area.
