The first stage of the northern variant of the Sentiero Italia in Lombardy is long and characterized by a significant elevation gain. Starting from Monte Olimpino, the route leads to the town of Cernobbio, where a trail heads north parallel to the state border, steeply ascending before turning east to reach the Capanna Falco Refuge, the summit of Monte Bisbino, and then descending to the nearby location of Ca’ Bossi. From Ca’ Bossi, the agro-silvo pastoral road is followed with signs for the Bugone Refuge. In front of the refuge, you can admire "Il Fuatèl,” an impressive centuries-old beech tree. From Bugone Refuge, keep right following the signs for the Murelli Refuge, crossing a beautiful beech forest. Then, continue along the road towards the former Binate Refuge, ignoring a side road on the right indicated as Agriturismo Roccolo/San Bernardo. The trail continues along the slope facing Switzerland, through pastures and alpine meadows, until reaching Binate peak. From there, leaving the agro-silvo pastoral road leading to Schignano, the trail veers left towards the Crocette area. Here, it passes on the slope of Val d'Intelvi, and along a former military road, it skirts Sasso Gordona. Inside this mountain, there are tunnels and military positions from World War I, part of the defensive Line Cadorna, built from 1915 along the Italian-Swiss border in anticipation of a possible offensive from Germany. At the fork marked Alpe Cerano-San Fedele, descend left along a comfortable mule track to reach the Prabello Refuge.
