After several days, the Sentiero Italia returns to the plains near the city of Tirano with this long stage featuring an intermediate ascent and a significant descent. From Prato Valentino, the route follows the ski slopes towards the mountain, then curves towards Monte Cancano at an altitude of 2435 meters. After a stretch that borders the Swiss border from the hamlet of Lughina, the path descends decisively, following some stretches of carriage road down to Tirano, the Italian terminus of the famous Bernina Railway that connects Valtellina with Sankt Moritz.
