This stage is characterized by a remarkable elevation gain that nears 2000 meters upwards. Starting from the town of Tirano, the trail initially follows the old mule track leading to the hamlet of Roncaiola, passing through the last vineyards on the Retic side of Valtellina. After the hamlet, the route continues along a steep path and then a mule track until reaching the locality of Pradentia, before descending slightly to the east, passing through the area of Pra Baruzzo. The ascent resumes along the slopes of Monte Masuccio, first along a forest road to the locality of Sovo, then taking a path that, with a final steep staircase to overcome a rocky bastion, arrives at Rifugio Schiazzera, a former barracks of the Guardia di Finanza that reminds us of the smuggling period with neighboring Switzerland.
