After the short stage of the previous day, a rather long yet gently descending route leads the Sentiero Italia to Varzo, following the road and railway tracks that head to Switzerland through the Sempione Pass. The first part of the route features a gradual ascent up to 2252 meters above sea level at the Passo di Variola. This is followed by a long descent of over 1500 meters in elevation, passing by the Stefanetti bivouac and reaching the outskirts of Varzo. Here, you cross the main road and the railway before arriving in the town center, where several accommodations are available for overnight stays.
The difficulty of this stage is rated EE (for experienced hikers) due to the length and elevation gain. For those wishing to split it into two parts, there is the option to rest at the Bivacco Lorino: in this case, the two half-stages are considered to be of difficulty E (hiking).
