With this moderately long stage and minimal elevation gain, the Sentiero Italia traverses the first alpine section of its extensive route. From Colle di Cadibona, it reaches the Forte di Monte Burotto, constructed between 1885 and 1890 for the defense of Lower Piedmont against potential attacks from the sea. Staying on the watershed that separates Val Bormida from Savonese, it reaches Forte Baraccone, built along the same defensive line as Forte Burotto, and skirts the summit of Monte Alto, arriving at Colla di San Giacomo, which overlooks the south towards Finalese and its famous limestone cliffs.
