This stage runs along the watershed of the Northern Apennines on the border between the provinces of Pistoia and Modena, separating the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian sides, Tuscany from Emilia Romagna. With a medium-length path and gentle elevation change, it connects two major ski resorts of Central Italy: Corno alle Scale and Abetone, passing by the 1937 meters of the summit of Libro Aperto, a mountain group named for its shape visible from Pistoia. From the highest peak, the route continues along the ridge for a stretch before diverting south and descending to Abetone.
