SI O06

Stage O06 starts at the Hotel Monte Viglio located in the municipality of Filettino (1058 m) and ends at Piazza Italia in the municipality of Vallepietra (786 m) near the Ostello del Pellegrino. The trail is well-marked with excellent horizontal and vertical signage. Departing from Hotel Monte Viglio, you descend Via Panoramica until reaching the Town Hall on Via Primo Maggio. At this point, you go down some steps to find yourself on Via Roma. Continuing along the route, after leaving the village of Filettino, you take Provincial Road 28 until you join the S.I., which follows the trail 655 GAF near Ponte Furbo, close to the Fonte Acqua Santa (approximately 2,000 m from the start). From there, you continue along the contour trail for about 1 km until you reach the Aniene River. After crossing the river and following the appropriate signage, you arrive at Fiumata. Continuing along the road, after about 1,300 m, you reach a fork (near Camping Fiumata); take the left following the designated signs. Leaving the fork on the left, near a visible ascent, there is a sign indicating continuation of the Sentiero Italia towards Fontana Rolli (S.I. and trail no. 655 GAF). The trail continues uphill. After passing a crossing with a small stream (Equiseto), the trail winds through a dense beech forest until reaching a panoramic ridge (Costa Lunga 1275 m) where there are stone walls. After a short stretch through thick woods, you arrive at Monte San Leonardo, staying on the ridge to reach the summit of Monte San Leonardo at 1526 m, the highest point of the itinerary. From here, continuing NW, the well-marked trail descends through a dense coniferous forest. Be careful not to lose the path, occasionally obstructed by fallen trees, until you reach a directional sign. From there, slightly deviating to the right on a gentle ascent, you first reach the Faito water trough (non-potable water) in poor condition, and shortly after, slightly higher, you find the Rifugio del Faito (located at 1447 m, about 9,700 m from the start). Leaving the Refuge, return to the signpost following the S.I. indications still in the NW direction, crossing the Altopiano del Faito characterized by splendid ancient beech forests. Continuing along the S.I. route, upon reaching Morra Rossa, you begin the descent on the S.I. towards Vallepietra. About 13,600 m from the start, during the descent, you encounter the Fontana delle Fosse (again, the water is not potable). Continuing down the trail, you will arrive at the municipality of Vallepietra, thus reaching the Ostello del Pellegrino in Piazza Italia. It is recommended to carry adequate supplies of water while traveling the route.
