Another stage of intermediate length and elevation gain that reaches and exceeds eastward to Lago del Salto, the largest hydroelectric basin in Lazio, created in 1940 with the construction of the eponymous dam that blocks a narrow, jagged valley, giving the lake the appearance of a fjord. From Varco Sabino, you ascend for the first part along provincial road 30 before taking a trail that, skirting the peak of Colle Ettore, descends to the lakeshore. You cross the dam and follow the carriage road until a deep bend where you encounter a path that ascends again, rising northwards until reaching the village of Staffoli.
