Hiking
Starting from the center of Morano Calabro, you follow approximately 7 km of road to the Colloreto area at the base of the Pollino Massif, where you can visit the ruins of the convent of the same name (906 m). Here, trail no. 901 begins, leading to Piano Gaudolino on the Calabrian-Lucanian border at an altitude of 1693 m (based on CASMEZ mapping, 1954); along this upward stretch, known as the Scala dei Moranesi, you will encounter numerous springs, many of considerable flow and of particular natural value. At Piano Gaudolino, there is a drinking fountain and a shelter. From Piano Gaudolino, you follow the base of Monte Pollino through dense beech forests until reaching Piano di Toscano using the IPV 2C trail (Route of Particular Importance). After exiting the beech forest, you follow the first section of trail no. 923, then continue until you reach the “Guardians of the Park,” a small group of large Loricate pines on the western edge of the Piana del Pollino (possibly with the aid of a map or GPS track since the signage is quite lacking due to insufficient supports and the constraints imposed by the National Park in zone A). From here, skirting the Grande Porta del Pollino, between Serra di Crispo and Serra delle Ciavole, the route merges into trail 931B and then onto IPV4, which leads to the Sanctuary of “Madonna di Pollino,” passing by the fountain “Pitt’ accurc’ ” and “Piano di Jannace.” By deviating from the path, you can enjoy the magnificent natural spectacle offered by the majestic Loricate pines of Serra delle Ciavole and Serra di Crispo (Garden of the Loricate). Near the sanctuary, there is the refuge “Pino Loricato” (1548 m).
