From Piazza Umberto I in the historic center of Rivello (460 m), you descend through the alleyways to almost reach the banks of the Noce River, where the church Madonna del Popolo (350 m) is located. After crossing the Roman bridge over the Noce River, a well-maintained path leads you uphill to Contrada Capo d’Elci. After passing over the S.S. 585 “Fondo Valle del Noce” on an overpass, you continue easily towards the village of Rotale on little-used municipal roads, both paved and unpaved, intersecting with the cycle path near the cemetery that leads you to the central square. In this small agricultural village, there is a drinking fountain, a grocery store, and a B&B where you can rest. Leaving Rotale, you continue on a path along Mount Serralunga to the area known as the Three Borders. The first part of the route, up to the Serralunga Pass, is on the southeastern slope, which is barren and rocky, while the second part runs along the northeastern slope, through the dense Mangarrone Forest among beeches, turkey oaks, and holm oaks. At the change in slope at the end of the forest, with a bit of attention, there is a perennial spring called “d’Avvucat” just a short distance from the trail. After passing through the Mangarrone Forest, from the “Tre Confini” area, you reach the first houses of “Affonnatore” along a dirt road. From there, you can reach the small district of Fortino, on the Lucano-Campano border, traversing alternating sections of paved roads and dirt paths, where during rainy periods, it is possible to find water pooling.
