SI U22

This stage, of medium length, heads decidedly south, surrounding the city of Cosenza and leaving the Sila mountains behind. It is a stage where urban trekking predominates, particularly crossing the villages of Serra Pedace and Pedace. The uniqueness of this section of the SI lies in the fact that it is possible to shorten the journey by using the train on the Cosenza - Catanzaro Lido line, the ancient narrow-gauge railway that connected the Ionian Sea with the 'Athens of Calabria'. Construction began in 1891, and the section relevant to hikers on the Sentiero Italia CAI, from Pedace to Aprigliano, was completed in 1897, while the entire route of 110 kilometers, dotted with beautiful viaducts and tunnels, was finished only in 1933. If one does not wish to use the railway, they can continue along provincial roads from Pedace to Pietrafitta (SP226), Aprigliano (SP217), Piane Crati (SP244), Figline (SP76), Piano Lago (SP241). From the arrival station, located in Piano Lago, within the Municipality of Mangone, one continues with stage U23.
