Hiking
A very short descent along the asphalt road connecting Passo dello Scalone, the border point between the Calabrian and Lucanian Apennines, with the village of Sant’Agata di Esaro, situated 22 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast. The village stands on a steep cliff overlooking the Esaro River and is believed to have been established in the Byzantine era. In the past, it experienced significant economic activity based on the processing of wood and threads (there were many silk worm farms). The name Sant’Agata is attributed to the devotion to the Catanese saint, which spread in the area brought by hermits and Byzantine monks who escaped from the persecutions and the Muslim invasion of Sicily.
