A short stage that is predominantly downhill, leading back to the hilly elevations of Morano Calabro. About halfway along the route, the extraordinary grassland of Piano Grande di Masistro is crossed, one of the most captivating locations in the Calabrian mountains: here, the rocky peaks of Monte Caroso (1408 m), Cozzo Barbalonga (1408 m), Cozzo l’Ancella (1366 m), Trabaccante (1412 m), Timpone del Vaccaro (1436 m), and Serra Ambruna (1320 m) curve their slopes towards the bottom of a large karst basin (some refer to it as “a perfect bowl”), with a diameter of one kilometer. The stage then descends to the town of Morano Calabro, which is perched around a conical hill and is one of the main centers of the Pollino National Park.
