Hiking
The Sentiero Italia route in Sicily begins with a moderately long stage and an intermediate elevation gain, entirely uphill. The trail ascends along the western side of Monte Erice (731 m), starting from the port of Trapani. The first stretch of 4.4 km is on paved road, passing through the historic center and the expansion area of Trapani and Casa Santa Erice, until reaching the intersection at via Manzoni. This is followed by a second 1 km stretch on paved roads along via Pola and via Sant’Anna, leading to the CAI sign, which marks one of the entrances to the equipped area of Martogna (239 m), where the Erice Adventure Park (privately managed) is located. The path continues on a dirt road with an intermediate elevation gain towards Pizzo Argenteria (334 m), where the Sanctuary of Sant’Anna (early 17th century) stands, a place for prayer and spiritual retreat, offering an unparalleled panoramic view of Trapani and the Egadi Islands. From the sanctuary, the trail continues on a dirt road, traversing a barren and stony landscape characterized by low Mediterranean scrub, until arriving at the area of San Nicola (650 m). Here, in just a few minutes, by turning left onto SP3 and then right onto the paved stepped road towards Porta Trapani, one can reach the historic center of Erice (704 m). From there, it is possible to continue for about 1 km along the Elimo-Punic Walls Trail until Porta Spada, and shortly after passing it, one arrives at via Apollinis and the stage change point. From this point, in just a few minutes, by ascending via Apollinis, one can reach the CAI Lodge in Erice and the SI Welcome Point (707 m).
