A short stage with exclusively negative elevation leads to the wild and fascinating eastern slope of Mount Etna. From the Sapienza Refuge, the trail crosses over the Silvestri Craters and through the state forest, reaching the Schiena d’Asino, where one can admire the lunar landscape of the Valle del Bove, the slope where lava flows from the major eruptions pour out. The descent continues along the ridge bordering the Valle del Bove, and after Monte Pomiciaro, multiple switchbacks of the carriage road are crossed before entering a forest that leads to the hamlet of Ballo di Zafferana Etnea.
